History of North Carolina
North Carolina was declared a colony in 1712 but people came to the land a lot earlier.In 1629, virginians sent Nathaniel Batts into what is now North Carolina to trade with Native Americans. He built a home and became the first European man to settle what would later be the colony of Carolina. In 1663, the colony of Carolina was declared a province by the king. He chose eight lords' proprietors to oversee that everything would go well in Carolina. In 1712, Carolina split into North Carolina and South Carolina. North Carolina was an official colony.
